Mars Pathfinder Project Collection, 1975-1998.

The collection consists of the following Mars Pathfinder record series: Rover Records; Science and Instruments; Publications, Reports, and Project Documents; Procurement and General Documents; Chronological Files; Meetings, Plans, Reviews, and Status/Other Reports; Videos; and Oversize Materials. The collection may contain duplicate documents, presentations, status reports and meeting notes when they were collected by more than one person, especially when personal notes were added. This collection contains both permanent and temporary records. In most cases, the word "presentation" in the following list refers to a paper copy of presentation slides. The first series includes Rover records. Folders 2-19 contain Mars Pathfinder Rover Design File Memos for 1993-1996. The design file provides a permanent record of the technical development of the project and documents why and how decisions were made. It includes technical information that may not be otherwise captured in project documents. The Rover Design File Contents list provides the DFM memo number, date, "from" name, and subject. The list covers only a portion of the memo collection. Folders 20-87 contain Mars Rover Sample Return Documents from 1987-1992 and Mars Pathfinder Rover documents from 1992-1997. MRSR was a precursor mission to Pathfinder. The records were collected by Donna (Pivirotto) Shirley, the MRSR Rover Team Manager. The first line of the folder description was generally copied verbatim from the original file folder label. Details from the folder contents were added by the archivist. The second series, folders 88-223, includes Science and Instrument records. Some of the instruments include: Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP), Alpha Proton X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS), and the Atmospheric Structure Instrument/Meterology (ASI/MET) Package. The majority of Science and Instruments records were collected by Tom Tomey, MESUR Pathfinder Science and Instruments System Engineer and were sent to records storage by Susan Roberts. Some IMP records were created at the University of Arizona, Martin Marietta, and the Max Planck Institute. Peter Smith, University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, was the principal investigator for the imaging system. Martin Marietta Astronautics Group, Denver, Colorado was the prime instrument contractor. The Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy, Lindau, Germany provided the image detector and supporting electronics. The third series, folders 224 - 333, includes Mars Pathfinder publications, reports, and project documents from a variety of sources, sent to storage by Susan Roberts. Within this series, folders 251-253 contain hard copies of Information Training Module presentations. The corresponding video tapes of those presentation were either moved to box 74 or deaccessioned. Several AVC numbered VHS videos were deaccessioned because they can be found in the JPL Audiovisual Services collection. Video tapes not found in the JPL Audiovisual Services collection were retained. The fourth series, folders 334 - 405, contains procurement (acquisitions) records collected by Randall (Randy) Taylor, the MESUR/MPF Procurement Manager. It includes a variety of project documents, such as planning, design, and development documents, meeting notes, status reports, IOMs, presentations, studies, and procurement/acquisition chronological files. They cover general project information, reviews, cost information, and mission options. Many documents are highlighted in yellow or include hand written notes. Most materials are in roughly reverse chronological order, so similar records are not filed together. The fifth series, folders 406 - 427, contains chronological files that appear to have been collected by Susan Roberts on behalf of several different people: Randy Taylor (Acquisition) [these 1993 files overlap the date range of his chronological files in folders listed above and are filed immediately following them], Mike Ebersole (Deputy Project Manager), Barrie Gauthier (Propulsion), Ed Kellum (Acquisition), Kris Nordin-Cullen (Project Administrator), Al Sacks (Ground Data), and Fran Sturms (Mission Operations). After the Taylor folders, files are arranged alphabetically by last name and may include other files and correspondence relating to the job title. Cronological files include plans, presentation packages, budgets, workforce information, and IOMs. The sixth series, folders 428-441, are images on various media: lithographs, prints on regular paper and photo paper, positive transparencies, CAD printouts, 35mm slides, and a few negatives. They were originally bound in several three ring binders. Most are in sheet protectors and some have JPL photo numbers. The seventh series, folders 442-517, contains various Mars Pathfinder project documents that were in Records Storage under Susan Roberts' name. They were added to the collection after the first 19 cubic feet (427 folders) had already been processed. They are arranged by subseries - meetings, plans, reviews, and status/other reports. Within each subseries they are further arranged by subject or date. The eighth series, folder 518, contains photocopies and reduced size printouts of oversize materials. They include Mars Pathfinder drawings, posters, and charts (EDL timelines), dated 1997-98. Originals are rolled and stored separately.

26.3 cubic ft. (548 folders)

This collection contains records of the Mars Pathfinder mission, including precursor missions known as Mars Environmental Survey (MESUR), MESUR Network, and Mars Rover Sample Return. Mars Pathfinder was originally designed as a technology demonstration of a way to deliver an instrumented lander and a free-ranging robotic rover to the surface of the red planet. It was intended as a precursor to a network of landers called MESUR. Because Pathfinder was the first mission, i...
